I am trying so hard to have a successful vegetable garden. I had one a long time ago but became interested in ornamental gardening. Two years ago I planted my first vegetable garden in 20 years. That year the chickens ate the garden all of it. Last year the garden was rained out. This year looked good until a few days ago. I noticed cucumber beetles all over my cucumbers and squash plants. Oh my, they were happy! The plants on the other hand were not.
Cucumber beetles overwinter in the soil as fertilized adults. They become active in early spring. Adults lay eggs at the base of the plants. As soon as the larvae hatch they begin to feed on plant roots. Catching these beetles early may help with the growth of the cucumbers. Once the plants are large, they usually outgrow the cucumber beetle damage. Unfortunately by then the beetles are around to overwinter in your garden for next year.
Right now I am going out each day and squishing any beetles that I find, but today I will bring home either an Eight Insect Vegetable, Fruit and Flower control (non-organic), Pyrethrin Garden Insect Spray, Tomato and Vegetable 3 in 1 or Garden Dust. Goodbye cucumber beetles!
